For the selection process, colour experts at the Pantone Colour Institute scour the world looking for new colour influences, from fashion, film, and travel destinations to socio-economic conditions. Towards the end of the year, a defining colour for the forthcoming year is announced.

In fact, for 2021, Pantone's experts have selected two colours that complement and support each other: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow. Some commenters have suggested that they represent light at the end of the tunnel.
